EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
