Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
