American Attack on Caracas Fuels Anxieties of Future Greenland Acquisition.

The recent US-led military action in the South American nation and the seizure of its leader have renewed worry regarding America's ambitions on the Arctic territory. Supporters of the former president's political movement have allegedly focused on the strategically important landmass following the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Merely a short time following the initiation of the Venezuelan operation, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is married to a high-ranking presidential adviser, posted a symbolic image. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the American flag, with the single-word message: "SOON."

This overt suggestion to claim the mineral-rich region, which is a part of the NATO alliance, triggered swift and strong condemnation from Danish representatives.

"We are close allies and should keep work together as such. American security is equally Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," stated the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat further pointed out that the kingdom had substantially increased its military budget this year, earmarking a substantial amount specifically for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "Furthermore, we expect complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The tensions were further complicated by the previous appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "privilege" to serve in a unpaid role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this envoy commended the administration's actions, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the American leader has consistently alarmed transatlantic partners with his expressed interest in Greenland. The island is viewed as vitally strategic for defence and potential resource extraction. It currently houses the northernmost US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Force

In a significant media appearance, the president refused to exclude the use of armed action to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid intensifying global competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this persistent "drumbeat" of intent, Danish intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of both Greenland delivered a unified and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a nuanced picture. While a vast majority of the territory's residents desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no appetite to join the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare sovereignty for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some analysts are now reconsidering the possibility of such a move. One policy director focusing in military analysis admitted she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
